Japanese Friendship Garden

Did you know the Japanese Friendship Garden, also known as San Kei En, is an expression of friendship between San Diego and its sister city, Yokohama? It illustrates two cultures and creates an immersive experience into Japanese culture.

JFG’s design is based on centuries-old Japanese techniques adapted to San Diego’s climate and florae and seeks to foster a relationship between humans and nature, providing a respite attuned to Japanese simplicity, serenity, and aestheticism.

This beautiful garden was designed by renowned landscape architect Takeo Uesugi. There is a grove of nearly 200 cherry tree grove, koi ponds, large azalea, a selection of bonsais and camellia garden along with Sukia Style structures.

A message from Balboa Park Sustainability Program:
While many of us are practicing social distancing – we’d like to share our coloring book as an educational resource or just a meditative break from our current situation.
We encourage abstract “coloring” with whatever household items you may have on hand (think – recycled items, e-waste, spices, flowers and plants, etc., but no glitter as it is a micro plastic pollutant).
We’d love to share your artful creations on our social media channels on a weekly basis!
